Many companies do the right thing and have a tape backup system working at their workplace. They might be doing all the recommended things - ie
- have a set of tapes that allow for one backup tape for each day of the week
- have multiple sets of tapes so that you can rotate week by week. The more sets the better. If you can afford 4 sets of tapes, that should cover a month's backup.
- keep regular backups offsite
Even though you might be doing a backup regularly, you usually only discover any short-comings whem you need to do a restore! When you try to do a restore, you might find that...
- the backups have not really been working at all (a staff member might have been putting in the tape - but the software had been reporting an error for the last 2 months)
- you might have corrupted a particular system file (ie a virus, perhaps), and you have been backing up this problem for days. You need a backup that goes back to BEFORE the problem point. That is why you have rotating backup sets.
- someone might steal your backup machine (or your building might burn down).
This latter problem is what SecureDoc directly addresses. You need to take a backup offsite every so often. We recommend once a month for most users, but it can be at any reasonable period, depending on many factors. We can store your backup tapes in our fireproof safe - we can schedule tape pickups and dropoffs to suit your business.
